Are you neurotypical or neurodiverse?

Neurodiversity describes many different presentations including people with ADHD, ASD, HSP, SPD, and Down’s Syndrome.  The beauty of using this terminology is that it normalises the fact that brains are different just as our facial features are. We do not all process information the same way. Nor do our sensory systems regulate in the identical way. The difficulty is appreciating the differences and not judging them as inferior.

Until recently, it was believed that there is a “right” way to learn, think and problem solve. It is called being neurotypical and usually connotes a structured, organised, vertical way of learning and organising life.

The sad thing is that for generations neurotypicals have designed how schools and other institutions work and have been forcing neurodiverse people to fit in. Not only has this not been successful but it caused untold mental health issues for the neurodiverse.

Let me share a personal anecdote. I am neurotypical and find it easy to plan and organise. I often make lists and stick to them. In the past, when a client of mine was stressed and overwhelmed with running their homes, I tried to teach the methods that work for me (and all the psychologists who have written manuals about it).  How wrong was that? It has been much more successful to work with each client to find out how their brain works and together find a solution that fits with their brain.

Being able to communicate openly about how one’s brain functions will take a lot of pressure off individuals. It will also provide important guidelines to therapists about what tools to teach and in what way.

We are at an important juncture in history, acknowledging human rights and the importance of accepting and valuing diversity. I am delighted to be part of it.

At Anxiety Solutions CBT Psychology Practice, we offer assessments and treatments that can benefit neurotypicals and neurodiverse people.  We strive to be inclusive and accepting. I continue to dedicate my knowledge and skills to benefit every individual.
