The name DRUMBEAT is an acronym for Discovering Relationships Using Music, Beliefs, Emotions, Attitudes, and Thoughts.

What is DRUMBEAT?

DRUMBEAT is an evidence-based, structured, learning program using music, psychology, and neurobiology to help us reconnect with ourselves and others. It was developed by Holyoake who continues to evaluate the program’s effectiveness and increasing the evidence base. There are over 7,000 DRUMBEAT facilitators worldwide.

How does DRUMBEAT work?

DRUMBEAT incorporates hand drumming, behavioural therapeutic principles, and cognitive and dialectical elements to achieve positive outcomes.

How can DRUMBEAT benefit me?

  • Increased mental wellbeing.
  • Increased resilience.
  • Increased knowledge and understanding of relationship issues.
  • Reduction in psychological distress.
  • Improved self-regulation.
  • Increased self-awareness.
  • Improved self-control.
  • Increased self-esteem.
  • Increased social and emotional learning.
  • Increased empathy.
  • Reduction in antisocial behaviour.
  • Reduction in school absenteeism.
  • Reduction in reportable school based behavioural incidences.

“DRUMBEAT breaks down walls between people. They might feel like they are isolated to a degree but they’re actually sharing the same sort of stuff. The drum is definitely the medium that helps break down these walls and gets people to connect to each other.” Alyson Welch

Are there evidence-based studies for DRUMBEAT?

Absolutely, Holyoake’s DRUMBEAT program is based on documented research that identifies key issues related to health and social outcomes. It also incorporates recent development in neurological research which notes the beneficial impact of rhythmic interventions on primal brain systems associated with anxiety and emotional control.

Action based research has been built into core activities of DRUMBEAT since its beginning and continues to inform program content. The facilitator accreditation progress provides a regular evaluative feedback which is incorporated into the program design.

Holyoake maintains a commitment to evidence-based practice. A wide range of studies have been completed to ensure the program’s effectiveness.

What is the process?

There are 6 sessions which are themed and teach skills that can be taught one-on-one or in groups. There is the option of completing 10 sessions with a group if requested. The additional 4 sessions involve preparing for a performance.

Find the session by session description and fees here.

Is DRUMBEAT safe?

DRUMBEAT is extremely safe, gentle, natural, relaxing and enjoyable. The facilitator is present the whole time. You will not be made to do anything you are uncomfortable with, and you can stop at any time during a session.

Do I have to be musical to join?

No. DRUMBEAT is not about learning to play an instrument or becoming a musician. It is using a drum to beat out a rhythm that is relaxing and meditative.

What is the commitment?

Your commitment is to attend all sessions of your course to obtain the best outcome. Also, as the group process is essential to growth, you have a commitment to the other members of the group to see it through.

What should I do about other psychological therapies I am doing now?

DRUMBEAT sessions are not meant to replace your current regime. We see it as an innovative and effective and-on to your tool kit of skills to improve mental wellness.

If you are seeing a therapist, you can inform them as a courtesy that you are doing DRUMBEAT. Do not stop taking medication if they have been prescribed by a doctor.

Are the sessions face-to-face?

You can choose to have individual sessions over zoom or face-to-face. Group sessions need to be face-to-face and will be conducted in Bondi.
