Children, Adolescents, Adults & Seniors
Working with each age group is a specialty. At Anxiety Solutions CBT there are psychologists who work with each of these groups.
Children – children tend to enjoy CBT therapy as well as play therapy and ther-a-play. Our tools have been adapted to be easy to understand and use for children age 4 years and up. Children experiencing social-emotional and behavioural difficulties require early intervention. Leaving these types of difficulties unaddressed can lead to habits of behaving and thinking which become more difficult to undo as the child grows older. Children attending therapy have much to be grateful for as the skills and abilities they develop during sessions aim to set them up for a life of social-emotional safety, authentic happiness and well-being.
Adolescents – are perhaps the most challenging age group to work with because adolescents typically withdraw from adults and many do not enjoy verbal communication. Adolescents want to be heard but often feel misunderstood and that adults do not listen to them. Balancing a young person’s need for confidentiality, with the needs of the parents can be extremely delicate. At Anxiety Solutions CBT we are mindful of working collaboratively with families, whilst maintaining the trust of the young person. Our adolescent specialist has a wonderful ability to make teenagers feel comfortable and listened to. A good alliance such as this is one of the best predictors of successful treatment for anxiety and depression.
Adults – tend to be the easiest population to work with because most of the time, they come to sessions of their own free will and have the verbal abilities to discuss issues. The tools utilised by our psychologists mean that most adults, regardless of verbal ability, can learn to manage their stress and anxiety.
Seniors – people over 70 years of age can be difficult to work with for many reasons:
- Poor mobility
- Hearing loss
- Lack of motivation
- Deteriorating concentration and processing
Where there are no serious deficits, and older people can communicate with a therapist, we can help. Older people tend to find the structure of our ten week program supportive.
